Shopify Price Calculator by Dimensions: Setup Guide 2027

Tape measure, pencil and floor plan next to stacked flooring boxes on a wooden surface

Short answer: how a price calculator by dimensions works on Shopify

The shopper enters width and height, the app computes the area, adds a waste allowance, rounds up to whole packages and sets the cart quantity. Shopify then charges the catalog price multiplied by that quantity.

That means this approach suits products sold in fixed units (boxes, rolls, square feet, yards). It is not a way to invent a different price for every custom size.

Which kind of "dimensions calculator" do you need?

Two very different tools get called a "price calculator by dimensions". Picking the wrong one is the most common reason merchants install an app and then uninstall it a week later.

Package-based: area to boxes, rolls and cartons

You sell flooring, tile, wallpaper, turf or insulation in fixed packages. The shopper knows the room, not the number of boxes. The calculator turns measurements into a whole number of packages, including waste. This is what Shoperize Price Calculator is built for.

Formula-priced custom sizes: blinds, banners, signs, cut-to-size panels

You make each item to order, and the price depends on a formula or a size grid (for example, a blind priced by width band and height band). Here the price itself is the output. Some apps list this as a core feature, and for these products they will usually fit better than a package-based tool. For a wider look at both types, see our buyer's guide to custom price calculator apps.

Quick decision table

Product sold by Rounding needed Price source Typical fit
Box, carton or roll (flooring, tile, wallpaper) Yes, up to whole packages Shopify catalog price per package Package-based calculator
Square foot, linear foot or yard Often a minimum or step Shopify catalog price per unit Package-based calculator with unit quantity
Made-to-order by exact size (blinds, banners) No, any size is allowed Formula or size grid Formula-priced custom-size app
Cut-to-size with a price that changes by size band No Size grid Formula-priced custom-size app

Step-by-step: set up a width x height calculator (worked example)

Shoperize Price Calculator is live on the Shopify App Store. The steps below use its capabilities: unit conversion, waste, package coverage, rounding, limits and product assignments. Exact screen labels vary, so treat the steps as the order of decisions, not a button-by-button script.

Step 1: Decide the sold unit and set the price in the Shopify catalog

Start in Shopify, not in the app. Say your plank flooring costs $4.20 per sq ft and ships in boxes of 20 sq ft. The variant you sell is the box, priced at $84 (4.20 x 20). The calculator never changes that price. It only decides how many boxes go in the cart.

Step 2: Set unit conversion and what the shopper enters

Choose the unit your shoppers think in: feet, inches, meters or centimeters. For a room, ask for width and length (or width and height for a wall). The app converts the entries to the unit your package coverage uses, so a shopper can enter meters while your box is defined in square feet.

Step 3: Add waste % and package coverage

Enter the box coverage (20 sq ft) and a waste allowance. Flooring merchants commonly use something around 5% to 15% depending on layout, so check your supplier's guidance rather than copying a number. This example uses 10%.

Step 4: Choose rounding, minimums and limits

Set rounding to round up to whole packages. Add a minimum (one box is a sensible floor) and sensible maximum dimensions, so a typo like 1400 ft instead of 14 ft does not put thousands of boxes in a cart.

You can build the rule manually, start from a template, or generate an editable AI draft and adjust it (plan limits apply). The Free plan supports one published area calculator on up to three products, which is enough to test on your best-selling SKUs.

Step 5: Assign to products and test on the live product page

Assign the rule to the products it applies to. Then open a real product page on desktop and mobile. Our measurement calculator on a product page setup guide covers placement and theme questions in more detail.

Step 6: Check the cart

Add to cart and look at what happens. The measurements should stay with the cart line, and the coverage shown should update if the shopper changes the quantity. If they bump 10 boxes to 11, the coverage should read 220 sq ft, not stay at 200.

Worked rounding examples

Every number below can be verified with a calculator. The total in each case is the Shopify catalog price multiplied by the whole-unit quantity.

Input Math Result
Room 12 x 14 ft 12 x 14 168 sq ft
Add 10% waste 168 x 1.10 184.8 sq ft
Boxes of 20 sq ft 184.8 / 20 = 9.24 Round up to 10 boxes
Coverage purchased 10 x 20 200 sq ft
Total at $84 per box 10 x $84 $840

The same room in metric

A shopper enters 3.66 x 4.27 m (about 12 x 14 ft).

Input Math Result
Room area 3.66 x 4.27 15.6282 sq m
Add 10% waste 15.6282 x 1.10 17.191 sq m
Box coverage 20 sq ft x 0.0929 about 1.86 sq m
Boxes 17.191 / 1.86 = 9.24 Round up to 10 boxes
Total at $84 per box 10 x $84 $840

Both inputs land on 10 boxes. Metric entries are usually rounded to two decimals, so the area can differ slightly from the imperial version. It rarely changes the box count, but it can when a room sits close to a box boundary, which is why the checklist below includes near-boundary tests.

Wallpaper: wall width x height with roll coverage

A shopper has 30 ft of total wall width at 8 ft high. Each roll covers 56 sq ft, the merchant uses 15% waste for pattern matching, and a roll costs $60 (example numbers).

Input Math Result
Wall area 30 x 8 240 sq ft
Add 15% waste 240 x 1.15 276 sq ft
Rolls 276 / 56 = 4.93 Round up to 5 rolls
Coverage purchased 5 x 56 280 sq ft
Total 5 x $60 $300

Edge cases: rounding down, minimums and exact fits

  • Rounding down: 9.24 rounds to 9 boxes, which is 180 sq ft. That covers the 168 sq ft room, but with only 12 sq ft (about 7.1%) of spare material, below the 10% you planned for. Any miscut and the shopper is short, and a reorder may come from a different dye lot.
  • Minimum of one box: a 3 x 4 ft closet is 12 sq ft, or 13.2 sq ft with waste. 13.2 / 20 = 0.66, which rounds up to 1 box.
  • Exact fit: 10 x 20 ft with 0% waste is 200 sq ft, exactly 10 boxes. Test that this does not tip over to 11.

What "charges come from Shopify catalog prices" means in practice

With Shoperize Price Calculator, the price at checkout is the variant's price in your Shopify catalog times the quantity in the cart. The app calculates and enforces the quantity. It does not replace the line price with a custom number.

What this lets you do:

  • Sell by the box, roll or carton and have the shopper buy the right count.
  • Sell by a unit such as square foot or yard, priced per unit in the catalog.
  • Keep Shopify's standard checkout, taxes and reporting behaving as normal.

What it does not do:

  • Compute a unique price from a formula for each custom size.
  • Price a 30 x 48 in panel differently from a 31 x 48 in panel using a size grid.

If you need a surcharge for cutting or a different rate by size band, the usual catalog-level options are separate variants or a separate product for the service. For made-to-order sizes where the price must come from the dimensions themselves, a formula-driven app is the more direct fit. The Apippa and Extendons listings, for example, describe price calculated from formulas.

Why variant-per-size and quote forms break down

Variants for every size

A 12 x 14 ft room is not a product variant. Even a modest range of widths and lengths creates hundreds of combinations to price, stock and maintain, and Shopify limits how many variants one product can have. Worse, the shopper still has to guess how many of the variants to buy.

Quote forms

A quote form asks the shopper to wait for an email before buying. Some will, many will not, and each quote is a manual task for your team. Errors creep in when someone re-types a measurement into a spreadsheet.

Spreadsheets and "just buy a bit extra"

A downloadable coverage chart or a line on the page saying "add 10%" pushes the math onto the shopper. A typical support ticket reads: "I ordered 9 boxes and I am a few feet short." Each one means a return, a reorder, a mismatched lot or a refund.

What package rounding plus cart enforcement changes

When the calculator does the area math, adds waste and rounds up, the cart quantity is already correct when the shopper checks out. Keeping the measurements on the cart line means your team can see how the number was reached. If the shopper changes the quantity, the coverage updates, so the page and the cart agree.

The listings that rank for this search: a fair comparison

Where each type fits

A decision rule that works for most stores:

  1. If the shopper must end up with a whole number of boxes, rolls or cartons, and you already price per package in Shopify, use a package-based calculator such as Shoperize Price Calculator.
  2. If every order is cut or printed to an exact size and the price must follow a formula or size grid, use a formula-priced custom-size app and compare the listings above for formulas, size bands and checkout behavior.
  3. If you do both (for example, tile by the box and cut-to-size trim), you may use different apps for different collections. Keep each product on one calculator only.

Test checklist before you publish the calculator

  • Five room sizes: include a tiny one (closet), a typical one (12 x 14 ft), a large one and an exact-fit area such as 200 sq ft with 0% waste.
  • Metric and imperial: enter the same room both ways and compare box counts.
  • Cart quantity changes: raise and lower the quantity and confirm the coverage updates.
  • Mobile and theme: check the product page on a phone and in your live theme.
  • Limits and empty inputs: try zero, blank, negative and absurdly large values, plus your min and max.
  • Order data: place a test order and check what your team sees for fulfillment.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is there a free Shopify price calculator by dimensions?

Yes, several apps offer free plans. Shoperize Price Calculator's Free plan supports one published area calculator on up to three products. Other apps list their own free plans and limits, such as EC Price Calculator by Measure with five rules, so check each App Store listing for current terms.

Can I charge a custom price per size?

Not with Shoperize Price Calculator. It sets a whole-unit cart quantity and Shopify charges the catalog price times that quantity, with no custom line-price replacement. If the price must come from a formula or size grid for made-to-order items, look at formula-priced apps and read their listings.

Does it work for metric units?

Yes. Shoperize Price Calculator supports unit conversion, so a shopper can enter meters or centimeters while your package coverage is defined in square feet, or the reverse. Test the same room in both units, because rounding of metric inputs can matter near a box boundary.

Can I use it for fabric or items sold by length?

Yes, if the product is sold in fixed units such as yards, meters or rolls. The shopper enters a length or area, the app applies waste and rounding, and the cart quantity reflects whole units. Price still comes from the catalog price per unit.
