Flooring box calculator
How many boxes do you need?
Enter the room size and the coverage printed on the box. The calculator adds your waste allowance and rounds up to whole boxes, the way a flooring order should be placed. Works for laminate, vinyl plank, hardwood and tile, in feet or metres.

Area, plus waste,
divided, rounded up.
Boxes = round up((length × width × (1 + waste %)) ÷ coverage per box). Add the waste before dividing and round once at the end; rounding twice buys boxes you don’t need.
Good questions.
Straight answers.
How many boxes of flooring do I need?
Multiply the room’s length by its width, add a waste allowance (often 5% to 10% for straight layouts), divide by the area one box covers, and round up. A 12 × 14 ft room with 10% waste and 20 sq ft boxes needs 10 boxes.
How much waste should I add?
Around 5% to 10% is common for straight plank or tile layouts, and 10% to 15% or more for diagonal or herringbone. Follow the manufacturer’s installation guidance for your product.
Where do I find the coverage per box?
It is printed on the carton and listed on the product page or spec sheet, usually in square feet or square metres per box.
Should I round up or to the nearest box?
Always round up. Rounding down leaves you short, and a second order may come from a different production lot with a slightly different shade.
